Window and House. Darwin, California.
I experimented briefly with pinhole photography in 1997. While I adored the medium, I didn't pursue pinhole as a vehicle of expression. At that time in my life, the traditional view camera was my tool of choice. In March 2007, I had a life-changing experience which altered the way that I interpret the world around me. Searching for a way to express this experience, I revisited pinhole photography. I now work exclusively with a Zero Image 4x5 pinhole camera. Without a viewfinder, I find that I'm somehow better equipped to capture exactly what I see. For me, the pinhole process is a contemplative practice where, for a brief moment, I tap into the soup of it all. I'm currently based in Eastern California between Mt. Whitney and Death Valley National Park. Here, I chase clouds and light from the Eastern Sierra to the Nevada border, recording things that stop me in my tracks. I attempt to photograph my subjects as they are in their natural setting. I'm drawn to fleeting moments that reveal naked truth.
